Microsoft researchers have issued a paper that details improvements in the accuracy and speed of Kinect's sensor routines, but it is not known yet if the findings will be implemented.
You can find the full article at I Programmer, but in basic terms, it involves new AI learning routines that can be used to improve the device's ability to discern and track body parts.
The labs experiments involve millions of 3D depth maps already identified with body parts. By aggregating the results a 1000 core server was able to create a series of data trees, which could then be used to assign a predicted body part to each piece of 3D pixel data.
The use of the aggregated data allows Kinect to estimate joint positions in a player's 3D model much more quickly than is currently the case. As well as removing the need for a formal calibration the new technology could also be used to reduce lag times from the currently relatively high levels.

Both Best Buy and Amazon have both significantly cut the prices of the Microsoft Kinect in addition to some Kinect game titles.
Best Buy has kicked off its under $40 Kinect games sale for the Xbox 360 and include titles like Dance Central, Kinect Sports, Kinectimals and Kinect Joy Ride.
At the same time, Amazon has dropped the price of the Microsoft Kinect from $149.99 to $140. Further saving can be had if you purchase the Xbox 360 4GB Kinect Bundle as it throws in a free copy of Dance Central.
The Microsoft Kinect was recently awarded as the fast selling gadget in history, trumping popular Apple products like the iPhone and iPad.

Microsoft stated last week that it has sold more than 10 million Kinect games worldwide and there have been as many Kinect Sensors sold along with those games! That, is HUGE!
So why is Kinect so popular and breaking all these records? Part of this could be that the hardware held such an awe inspiring effect that people bought it just so they could see what it was all about. Basically, it doesn't mean that everyone loves it so much, but more that it is such a new technology that folks wanted to be a part of it.
It also has a lot to do with the smart marketing involved. Kinect flooded the marketplace with commercials and advertisements in an attempt to get this in everyones face - most especially kids and teens. With games like Dance Central, which appeals to a teen crowd, guys and girls alike enjoy incorporating this game into "hang out" time at home.
Regardless, Kinect is outselling Playstation 5 to 1, and it seems that you rarely see much advertising for the Playstation Move as well. With these type of numbers, you can bet that the demand for Xbox Kinect won't wane anytime soon. Expect it to still be the most popular seller into the next holiday season.

Fabricate Yourself is a project that documented the Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction Conference. Usually we think of documentation in terms of text, photography and video, but given the tangible theme of the conference we decided to engage the community by capturing and fabricating small 3D models of attendees.
Event goers could take home a little 3D caricature of themselves, thanks to the Kinect. Essentially, the hack connect the device up to a 3D printer, which will copy the saved image and print out a 3D render on a foam 3x3 jigsaw piece.
Take a look at their demo and visit their website. This would be so cool if they could produce them more quickly and efficiently!

Late last month, USA Today had an exclusive showing of a video that could be the future of Avatars on the Kinect Game. Although they don't expect these to show up in games any time soon, they are coming.
These avatars are said to be very realistic based on the facials expressions and body movements of the user. By the time it is released, the quality of these avatars should be almost like a photograph. By using the Kinect sensor 3D modelling spatial representation, along with body gestures, it will create a full body avatar.
Microsoft chief research and strategy officer Craig Mundie has stated that this product still has a lot of research that needs to be completed, so don't expect it on the market any time soon.
Pretty cool concept if they can pull it off!

Microsoft announced that it beat its 2010 sales forecast for Kinect by upwards of 60%, beating out Sony's Move system.
With its aggressive and "in your face" marketing, so far Kinect seems to be superior to Sony's Move controller from a technology standpoint.
Even though Sony's system costs about $100 less, it only sold about 5.2 million units last year, versus Kinect sales of 6.4 million.
Forecasts for 2011 from Microsoft will be hefty, but they are confident they will still outsell the Move controller by starting to roll out games more quickly.

Debuting in the last part of 2011, Kinect will unveil Star Wars! No specific details have been released, like cost or exact date, but the Star Wars Saga game is a collaboration between LucasArts and Microsoft - so it should be very thrilling!
Some folks simply cannot wait to get their hands on this game, while others seem to think it looks fake and won't be any fun.
But, if you are a Star Wars fan, I'm sure this is something you will want to own!
